The name "Connecticut" comes from the Mohegan Indian word "Quinnehtukqut" meaning "Long River Place" or "Beside the Long Tidal River." Connecticut is the fifth of the original thirteen states. Connetcicut has several taxes colledted at the state level including individual income tax, state sales tax, and property tax. Connecticut did not have a state income tax until 1991, which caused an extremely high property tax rate.
