Georgia is bordered by Tennessee and North Carolina to the north, South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Florida to the south, and Alabama to the west.

Georgia is the 24th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 8.2 million is the 10th most populous state. Major industries include textiles, timber (especially pine), agriculture (cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans, poultry).  Georgia's nicknames are Empire State of the South, and the Peach State. Georgia was named in honor of King George II of England.

Georgia's current flag was adopted in May 2003, and replaced a previous flag that was adopted in January 2001, which replaced the state's previous controversial flag which prominently featured the flag of the Confederacy.
