Kansas is the 15th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 2.7 million, is the 32nd most populous state. Kansas became the 34th state on January 29, 1861. Major industries include agriculture (wheat and other grains), aircraft manufacturing, and automobile manufacturing. Kansas was named for Konza (also called Kansa or Kaw) Indians who lived in the area. The nickname of Kansas is "The Sunflower State"
