North Dakota is bounded by the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada on the north, by Minnesota on the east, by South Dakota on the south, and by Montana on the west. North Dakota is the 19th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 642,000 is the 47th most populous state. The major industries of North Dakota include farming (wheat, barley, oats, flaxseed), cattle, mining (lignite, soft coal), and electrical power generation. North Dakota was admitted to the Union as the 39th state on November 2, 1889.

The name of the state was named after "Dakota", which was what the Sioux Indians called themselves. The nickname of the state of North Dakota is Peace Garden State, Flickertail State, and Roughrider State.

North Dakota has several state taxes, including a personal income tax, state sales tax, and property taxes.
