Oregon was admitted to the Union as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. The origina of the name "Oregon" is unknown. It may have come from the French word Ouragan (which means Hurricane) and was a former name of the Columbia River. The nickname of the state of Oregon is "The Beaver State"
