Be Careful of Africanized Honey Bees and Rattlesnakes this time of year

In the last day or so, a woman says she was riding her horse and leading a yearling on Upper Si’s Canyon Trail in the Palos Verdes Estates area when a swarm of bees attacked, targeting her face and the horse she was riding. She escaped unharmed, and a bee hive was later removed from an old water meter that had been leaking.

Experts suggest that if attacked by bees, run away and attempt to get indoors as soon as possible but do not flail away at the bees as they are attracted by strong movement. Also try not to swat the bees as they are attracted by the scent of their fellow bees. Africanized bees will continue their attack for up to 1,100 feet, but if you run fast you can outrun the swarm.

This is the time of year rattlesnakes are also very active on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, so be very careful and aware of your surroundings when hiking on our local trails.
