It was a sad day yesterday when a Los Angeles institution closed it’s door for the last time. Tom Bergin’s , the venerable Irish pub on Fairfax Blvd closed down last night after giving their patrons only 4 days notice.

My husband and I met there 35 years ago, and had our shamrocks hung over the spot where we met at the circular bar that looks like it came from the Cheers bar, and which some people say was the inspiration for Cheers.

We got there at 7 pm planning to have our 34th wedding anniversary dinner which was last night and instead 4 burly bouncer guys in black coats refused to let us in saying that they had run out of beer and food. They wouldn’t even let us in for a couple of minutes to say goodbye to our shamrocks!!

The current owners are saying that they are trying to find a buyer for the bar that was founded in 1936. We can only hope so.
