South Bay Civic Light Opera on Its Last Legs
My husband and I have enjoyed many of the musical productions of the South Bay Civic Light Opera at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, but after the Civic Light Opera was sued for over $200,000 in back rent, it appears that the end may be near for this award winning institution. El Segundo Unified School District Superintendent Geoff Yantz confirmed that negotiations were nearly finalized and the light opera company was tentatively set to stage its first production - "CSI Bethlehem" - at the El Segundo Performing Arts Center, dubbed [...]

St. John Fisher Breaks Ground on New Sanctuary
today was the ground breaking ceremony for construction of the new Sanctuary for St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes at the corner of Crest and Crenshaw. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which oversees local parishes, recently gave its approval for work to start on the new 17,000-square-foot sanctuary with a 74-foot lighted cross. The church, established in 1961, will use its current sanctuary for an athletic and community center, and several other buildings will be torn down or modified. Construction is expected to cost $20 million take about 14 [...]
FHA borrowers may again see expanded loan limits
The following is an excerpt from the weekly newsletter from HSH associates: "FHA borrowers may again see expanded loan limits. Congress attached a provision doing so to a bill that President Obama is expected to sign into law before long. This comes on the heels of a report questioning the solvency of the FHA insurance program and the possibility that the fund may need a taxpayer bailout in the next two years. The limits were only reduced a few short weeks ago, and there is little evidence that lower limits have [...]
History of the Palos Verdes Beach & Athletic Club
The Palos Verdes Bathhouse and Beach Club opened in June 1930 at a cost of $15,000, as a community amenity to be enjoyed by new property owners in the Palos Verdes Project, which at the time consisted of 499 residents.. Noted architect, Kirtland Cutter, designed this beautiful landmark on the beach in Malaga Cove. In 1939, the newly incorporated City of Palos Verdes Estates assumed ownership from the Palos Verdes Homes Association. For many years, the pool was a salt water plunge. At some point in time, a large cinder block [...]
Palos Verdes and UCLA
The following is an excerpt from my website regarding secrets and little know facts about the Palos Verdes Peninsula (see https://www.maureenmegowan.com/convertedpages/pvsecrets.html ): "A section of 1,000 acres was originally set aside by the planners of the Palos Verdes Project for a University campus, which ultimately was proposed, in 1925, for the new southern branch of the University of California, which later became UCLA. This land was in the center of the Palos Verdes Peninsula where Peninsula High School, the Peninsula Shopping Center, and the Avenue of the Peninsula Shopping Center is [...]
Interest Rates remain near record lows
Interest rates eased down again , and remain near historical lows. With the volatility in the stock market expected to continue, the flight to safety and bonds is expected to continue, keeping interest rates down The following are some excerpts from this week's newsletter on interest rates from HSH Associates : "Italy joined Greece in spooking the markets this week, and safe-haven money again flowed into the US Treasury markets, pressing interest rates down. As fixed mortgage rates follow Treasuries, they also found some space to decline, and are within a [...]
