Peacocks Becoming an Increasing Problem in Rancho Palos Verdes
Peacocks are becoming an increasing problem in Rancho Palos Verdes. The size of several flocks in local neighborhoods have increased substantially recently, and the city of Rancho Palos Verdes has hired an outside consultant to advise on a program to diminish the problem. Last month, the City voted to spend $15,000 to reduce the number of peafowl, and is currently negotiating with trappers to relocate some of the birds.
A consultant hired by the City found 134 birds in the city in 2000, and a recent updated census found 205, a 53% increase. In the Vista Grande area, the peafowl had increased 207% in the last eight years. Many residents have complained about the peafowl tearing up their gardens and leaving obnoxious droppings. Other residents who like the peafowl have fed them or released them from traps, and the City has passed ordinances making both illegal.
