Description: The Golf course offers spectacular views of Catalina Island and the ocean, with unobstructed ocean views from every hole. The course generally terraces down toward the ocean, with parallel fairways. The white sand sand traps are beautiful, and the Pete Dye designed course ( modified as a Donald Trump Signature Golf Course ) is very challenging. The fairways were widened by Trump, but are still relatively narrow.
Critique: This golf course gives meaning to the golf saying “A good walk spoiled”. For the average golfer, this course is extremely frustrating, so bring a lot of balls. Most golfers will lose 6 to 10 balls a round. The problem is that because the fairways terrace down towards the ocean, each of the fairways on most of the holes to the south of the clubhouse are bordered by a slope, vegetated by natural shrubbery, where it is illegal to try and retrieve your ball or play out of the shrubs because the slopes are environmentally protected. Therefore, if you are off the fairway, you have probably lost a ball. The course is spectacular to play, and is absolutely gorgeous, therefore when you come here to play, come for the views and the knowledge that you will probably not score well and will lose a lot of balls. That mind set will make your day on this course much more enjoyable.
Club house: The Cafe Pacific restaurant is excellent, offering spectacular ocean views. The Grand Ballroom, seating over 300 guests, is also available for weddings and special events.

Description: This course was designed by the same golf course architect that designed Riviera Country Club, Bel-Air Country Club, and Los Angeles Country Club, George C. Thomas. It is a par 71, approx. 6200 yard course (from the blue tees) with a slope rating of 129.
Critique: This is my favorite golf course on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It is an absolutely gorgeous golf course with ocean views from many of the holes, down Valmonte canyon. It has a feel very similar to Riveria Country Club, with fairways often bordered by eucalyptus tree groves. Several holes require hitting over a barranca, especially hole number 12, with an intimidating uphill drive. The course has a great deal of character, and although I have been playing the course over 20 years, I never get tired of it. The course is relatively short (approx. 6200 yards from the blue tees) but is tricky, and local knowledge helps a lot. The course is in great shape, with a new recently installed irrigation system, and the greens are usually impeccable. The other advantage of this course is the pace of play. Members who tee off in the afternoons often seem to play only nine holes, which makes the back nine play very quickly. Your round of golf here should not take longer than 4 hours, and often less.
Club house: The club house is open to the public for lunch 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Thursday night dining and Sunday morning brunch are also open to the public. Call for reservations (375-2533). City residents may apply for either a golf or social membership for a fee. Description: 6,626 yard par 71 layout with a slope rating of 122 from the blue tees. It is run by the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Dept. and managed by American Golf. It is one of the most popular public golf courses in Los Angeles County, and is very difficult to get a tee time ( 310-377-7370 tee times or 310-377-7888, general phone number).
Critique: This is an excellent public course, with beautiful ocean views from many of the holes, The fairways tend to be wide open, and errant tee shots can often be played from adjacent fairways. One problem with this course is that it is almost impossible to get an advance tee time, with a representative of regular foursomes often spending the night in the parking lot a week before so that they can get a tee time when the starter opens at 6 am to take tee times. It can also take 3 to 4 hours to get off when putting your name on the wait list on the day you want to play. The fairways can be a bit hard in the summer. The other major problem with this golf course is the pace of play. 5 1/2 to 6 hour rounds are common, and the second hole often backs up with 2 or 3 foursomes waiting to tee off on a week end. If you come to play this course with a lot of patience, and with the intent to enjoy the views and the great weather, you will have a fun day of golf. The price is also hard to beat.
Club house: The club house is available for weddings, meetings and special events.

ROLLING HILLS COUNTRY CLUB
Location: 27000 Palos Verdes Drive East. Rolling Hills Estates 90274
Description: This is strictly a private country club and public play is not permitted. This had been a relatively short par 70 course totaling just over 6100 yards from the blue tees. In 2018 200 acres of the Chandler Quarry site in Rolling Hills Estates was used to expand the Golf Course and Club house. The development expanded the previous 6,112-yard Rolling Hills Country Club golf course to 7,000 yards; relocated and enlarged the existing, 30,000-square-foot clubhouse by 15,000 square feet; and constructed 114 new homes.

Critique: This is a beautiful golf course.
PROPOSED SOUTH COUNTY PUBLIC GOLF COURSE
The County of Los Angeles had proposed constructing a new golf course on the site of the closed Palos Verdes landfill, located at 26300 Crenshaw Boulevard, within the boundaries of Hawthorne Boulevard on the northwest, Rolling Hills Road on the northeast, Palos Verdes Drive on the southwest and Crenshaw Boulevard on the southeast. The former landfill is owned and controlled by the Sanitation Districts of the County of Los Angeles.
Unfortunately, on April 20, 2006, the proposed developer announced that after expending more than $3 million in studies and designs for the proposed golf course, that they would no longer pursue the project. Their decision was based on huge increases in the projected cost of the project, that would have made the cost of a round of golf prohibitive.
The proposed project would have included construction of an 18-hole, par 72, approximately 6,500-yard golf course with a practice area, putting green, clubhouse, parking lot and relocation of the existing Rolling Hills Estates Equestrian Center.
The developer proposed an approximately 20,000 square foot two-story clubhouse which would include a restaurant, conference center, offices, locker rooms, youth/childcare area, and basement for golf cart storage area. The proposed clubhouse, which would close at midnight, was to be used for banquets, golf tournaments, business luncheons and community/public uses. As proposed, there would have been no lit driving range and the only nighttime lighting would be low-level, low-intensity security lighting.
Under the proposed project, the new equestrian center, which would have been built by the City of Rolling Hills Estates, would have provided capacity for 115 houses and would have included rings, barns, stalls and offices. The existing riding trails would have been redesigned to accommodate the new golf course.
The golf course had been designed by Meritage Rolling Hills Golf, LLC, which would also have been responsible for preparing the environmental documents for the project. The City had expressed concerns about several issues related to the project, including its impact on traffic, noise, security and water runoff, as well as the design of the golf course and the relocation of the Equestrian Center. Ultimately, however, massive increases in the projected cost of the project proved its demise.
